Frederic Community Education is committed to providing a wide variety of programs and offerings to the residents of the Frederic School District and neighboring area. We offer educational and enrichment experiences for all ages--infant through senior citizen. We believe learning is a lifelong experience! FALL, 2019 - Classes & Activities
 

COMMUNITY BIKE RIDE

Saturday - Sept. 21 at 10am

Frederic Soo Line Depot      

FREE (need to have a trail pass)

Join Community Ed and the North Country Pedalers at the Frederic Soo Line Depot and ride the Gandy Dancer Trail to Lewis, stop at the United Methodist Church for rest & refreshments and ride the Gandy back to Frederic. Trail passes are necessary ($5/day) and available for purchase at the Depot the morning of the event.

 

BODY 360

Mon/Wed – Sept. 16 – Oct. 23 from 5:15-6am

Frederic Elementary     Instr:  Jada Anderson

FEE:  12 sessions for $60 or 6 sessions for $30 / $7 walk-ins

Come & join in the fun with this HIIT focused class that uses weights to help build muscle and burn fat! All ages are welcome. Bring: Yoga mat, dumbbells, water bottle.

 

BOOT CAMP

Tues/Thurs – Sept. 17 – Dec. 19 from 5:45-6:30am  (no class week of Oct. 7)

FEE:  $45/10 class punch card or $5/class (punch card is good for 3 months)

Start your morning with a boot camp inspired calorie torching workout class! Don't let the boot camp name scare you, all exercises can be modified to low or high intensity levels. Class ends with 5 minutes of ab exercises. Bring: exercise mat, free weights and a water bottle.

 

YOGA BARRE

Sundays – Sept. 15 – Oct. 20 from 6-6:45pm

FEE:  $30/6 sessions or $7 walk-in

Get a full-body buzz at Barre! Feel the burn in a fitness class packed with yoga, weights & barre exercises. All ages welcome. What is Barre? Barre is a class that is based on the elements of barre positions, yoga & pilates. The movements consist of high energy, low impact & fat burning exercises. With emphasis on posture & technique, you create long, lean muscles. Bring: yoga mat, light weights (2-3# dumbbells) & water bottle.

 

CARDIO KICKBOXING

Mondays – Sept. 16 – Oct. 21 from 6-6:45pm  (no class Oct. 7)

FEE:  $25/5 sessions or $5/class

This class will be a tabata-type timing with a mix of cardio & kickboxing exercises. All exercises can be modified to low intensity and to accommodate all fitness levels. Class will end with a 5 minute ab/core workout. Bring: exercise mat, free weights & water bottle.

 

BURCH BARN TRIP

Monday – Sept. 23 at 8:45am

FEE:  $13/person

Pre-school to age 11 children! Ride the school bus to Spooner. Story time for the young ones, giant corn maze, grain train ride, corn pit, play yard with bounce toys and slide! Bring a bag lunch to enjoy after two hours of play! Go home with a pumpkin! This is a Frederic 'No School Day'. All children MUST be accompanied by a guardian or daycare provider. Bus leaves Frederic at 8:45am. Pick-up at Four-Winds (Siren) on the way. Return to Frederic around 2:15pm.

 

FALL PREVENTION for Seniors

Community Education has partnered with UW-Extension to bring a 7-week class to seniors. As we get older, many of us worry more about falling. Finding Your Balance is an engaging program designed to reduce the chance of falling for those who attend. Topics covered: Exercises for balance and strength, understanding risk factors for falling and simple strategies for reducing the chances of falling both at home and when out and about. 

 

LETTERS TO LEGISLATORS

Monday – Sept. 30 from 6-8pm

Are you frustrated with current laws and lawmakers, but not sure how to make your opinion count? Are you unsure about who to contact, how to contact them, or how to get your letter started? Does your letter even count? Letters to Legislators will help you find actual government contact information, access legitimate government information sites, and assist in composing and sending a letter to your legislator. Senator Patty Schachtner & Representative Gae Magnafici will be on hand during this one-night workshop to talk about how they respond to constituents' concerns and ideas. This is a two-hour workshop, but participants may choose to just come and meet their legislators.

 

COMMUNITY FINANCIAL FITNESS

Improve your financial strength by attending this class! These FREE classes are the collaborative effort of local professionals & educators who will share in their specific areas of expertise. Classes are designed to be relevant, informative, interactive & easy to grasp. As consumers today, we find ourselves in a fast-paced financial climate that is constantly changing & becoming more complex. Learn the fundamental principles of finance along with the latest innovative financial tools and strategies necessary to successfully navigate in today’s economy.

 

Heartsaver CPR / AED / FIRST AID

Thursdays – Oct. 3 – Oct. 10 (CPR/AED: 6-9:30pm / 1st Aid: 6-7:30pm)

FEE:  $45/night

This is a video based, instructor-led course that teaches students critical skills needed to respond to and manage an emergency until emergency medical services arrives. Skills covered in this course include first aid, choking relief and sudden cardiac arrest in adults, children and infants. This course teaches skills with AHA's research-proven practice-while-watching technique which allows instructors to observe the students, provide feedback & guide the students' learning of skills. Cost includes CPR certification card. Class size limited to 10 students. Register for one or both of the courses.

 

WRITE RIGHT NOW!

Whether you are creating short stories, a novel, a memoir or play, or a piece for your local newspaper, this is a place to come for hints to improve your project and for inspiration and encouragement from other listeners/readers/writers.

 

VEGETARIAN COOKING

Tuesday – Oct. 8 from 6-9pm

FEE:  $24/person ($40/pair) + $6 food/person

What? No meat? Aaahhh! Yes, no meat - only vegetables & you'll be surprised at how all of these wonderful vegetarian dishes will please your palate. Fall is here, so what do you do with all of those garden veggies? Well, you can make stews, stir fry... Stuff them and bake them (especially those zucchini). Learn to have fun enjoying vegetables with your family!

 

APPLE PIE MAKE & TAKE  

Saturday – Oct. 12 at 9am

Come make apple pies as a group, then take your pies home to freeze and enjoy year-round! Class size will be limited to 10 people and our goal will be for everyone to bring home 10 pies.  If you have extra apples and peelers/corers, please bring them. All packaging supplies and ingredients will be included.  Timberland Orchard will be donating apples.

 

MOSAIC SIGN or PICTURE FRAME

Thursdays – Oct. 17 – Oct. 24 from 6-9pm

FEE:  $28 + material fee (payable to instructor)

SIGNS: This is a very popular class; its easy, fun and the results are always amazing, even for the artistically challenged. Make a sign that welcomes your friends, shows your house numbers or has a message such as No Smoking, Believe or Family. There are a variety of sign sizes to choose from ranging in price from $15-$30 (material fee) depending on how much you have to say! Letter patterns will be available to use, or bring your own.

FRAMES: Big, little, wide, narrow, square...all sorts of picture frames to select from ranging in price from $15-$20 (material fee). All the glass is pre-cut so you can begin creating right away. If you don't finish the first night, there will be some homework. The next week you will see your design come together as the grout is applied. Dress for mess & bring towels! This is a fun class to bring kids to (min. age of 10 yrs). Or plan a girls' night out!

 

PRAIRIE FIRE CHILDREN'S THEATER

Monday-Saturday – Oct. 21 – 26

Monday audition at 3:35pm – Practices:  Mon. – Fri. from 3:30-8pm

Performances:  Friday, Oct. 25 at 7pm  &  Saturday, Oct. 26 at 2pm

Student participation fee:  $10  /  Admission:  $3 – student, $5 - adult

Up to 81 local children are needed to play the roles of Peter Pan, Wendy, John, Michael, Nana, Tinkerbelle, The Crocodile, The Pirates, The Lost Kids, and other inhabitants of Neverland. No advance preparation is necessary. Auditions are open to age seven and older. The audition session will last two hours and all auditioners are required to be in attendance the full time. The cast will be announced at the end of auditions and each case member will receive a rehearsal schedule for the remainder of the week.

HOW TO USE OIL & VINEGAR TO LIVEN UP YOUR DISHES

Learn about the many uses for Extra Virgin Olive Oils and Barrel Aged Balsamic Vinegars! In this class, you will learn what to look for in choosing high quality oils and vinegars. You will use a wide variety of oils and vinegars to show their versatility for breakfast, lunch, appetizers, dinner and of course desserts! Oil and vinegars are an excellent way to add great depth of flavor to dishes without all the chopping and preparing when using fresh foods from scratch. You'll be taught short cuts and time savers without skimping on flavor. Come hungry! You will be eating many small bites of different foods.

 

NATURAL SOLUTIONS TO PREPARE FOR WINTER

Come and learn about how to use essential oils to prepare for the winter sick season and ditch a few over the counter medicines! Make 3 rollerball blends, natural hand sanitizer spray and immunity boosting foamy soap. Rollerball blends are: Immunity Boost, Open Air-ways and Sleepy Time.

CARIBBEAN COOKING

Tuesday – Nov. 12 from 6-9pm

Wonder why folks living in the Caribbean are so happy all the time? Foods and drinks are plentiful. Come learn how to make Empanadas, Papas, Rellanos.... many entrees that would bring a smile to your face & your guests'. It is easy & fun. Come see for yourself!

 

LET'S MAKE LEFSE!

Monday – Nov. 18 from 6:30-8pm

A Scandinavian tradition is making and eating lefse for the Thanksgiving & Christmas holidays. This session will share recipes and techniques on how to make this delicious treat….and of course, eating lefse at the class! If you have any lefse making equipment (grill, stick, pastry board with cloth, rolling pin, potato ricer), please bring them. Also, bring a family lefse recipe if you have one. Class size limited to 10 students.

 

MAKE & TAKE BALSAM PINE WREATH OR PORCH POT

Thursday – Nov. 21 at 6:30pm

Location:  The Rose Garden     Instr:  Sally Rose

FEE:  $10 + material cost ($20 minimum class fee)

WREATH: Spend an evening making a 24" Balsam Pine door wreath, then decorate it to show your own personal style! You will have ribbons, pine cones & fun holiday decor to add to the wreath, or you can choose a pre-made wreath to decorate.

PORCH POT: Make a porch pot of fresh winter greens and add your style to accent your home. You can bring your favorite pot or purchase one on-site.

MOSAIC STAINED GLASS WINDOW or 2 CANDLE HOLDERS

Thursdays – Dec. 5 – Dec. 12 from 6-9pm

FEE:  $28 + material fee

WINDOW : This up-dated stained glass uses the mosaic technique which makes it easy and fun! The 8.5x11" glass panel is perfect for any window.  

CANDLE HOLDERS: 2 candle holders (about 4"x4"x4" each) make unique handmade gifts - or keep yourself! All of the tedious glass cutting is done and ready for your creativity. Instructor will also have patterns for you to use. With gentle guidance, you are on your way to making your own glass art. The 1st night you will get the glass work done (or finish with homework) and the 2nd night you will use grout to transform your window or candle holders into YOUR art. Dress for mess and bring old towels. Material fee is $29 (either project).

 

CHRISTMAS COOKIE MAKE & TAKE

Saturday – Dec. 7 at 1pm

FEE:  $25 (food included)

Fill up those Christmas cookie trays the easy way! Make approximately 10 kinds of cookies (bake & no-bake) including favorites like peanut butter blossoms, crinkles, frosted sugar cookies, Russian tea cakes, fudge, wreaths, dipped pretzels...) Then divide them up to take home and enjoy through the Christmas season. Our goal be for each participant to bring home about 1 dozen of each kind. Class size limited to 10 people.  All recipes and ingredients will be provided. Bring your own storage containers.
